CHAPTER 12

Calvin climbed back up the rise to their makeshift campsite. A light rain still fell. Weighed down and one-handed with two full canteens and half a helmet of water, he slowed his steps. Mist chilled his face. Without his helmet, his hair dripped into his eyes. He was freezing. It would be good to get back to the fire.

If only he could cool his thoughts and slow down this growing attraction toward Raisa. How was it possible to be stuck in this situation, wandering lost and hungry, arguing one moment teasing the next? How could he possibly be having such strong feelings for someone he’d only met a few days ago? Along with being shot, a crashed plane, dead navigator, nearly bleeding to death, and running from the damned Germans for Christ’s sake.

He had told her about Betty. He hadn’t talked to anyone about her since being transferred to the 622nd. Hadn’t shared any of what happened that horrific day. Shared any of the pain. Not even with Shep. But he had told Raisa. Spilled his guts like he’d known her forever. It had been easier than he imagined and made him feel lighter somehow. For more than a solid year he’d lugged the weight of the guilt and grief around, and somehow having Raisa know all of it lessened some of the heaviness. How was that possible?

And Lord help him, he wasn’t a “foot guy,” but the sight of her perfect, tiny foot had stirred his thoughts toward things like kissing her toes and not stopping until he reached her mouth. Dammit, he’d only known her four days.

Lost and hungry, his mind and body shouldn’t be thinking about anything other than finding a way out of this mess, but he couldn’t seem to help himself from wondering what getting lost in her eyes and hungrily taking her mouth might be like. Perhaps lack of food was making him delirious.

At the crest of the hill, he looked back over his shoulder. Delirious or not, there was a good chance they wouldn’t be lost and hungry for much longer. Although, if he were being honest, part of him wasn’t anxious to see his time with Raisa end. How crazy was that?

“Calvin?” Raisa rushed toward him startling him out of his thoughts. “I thought you left.”

“Without saying ‘Goodbye?’” he teased.

“Don’t be glib. I—” She noticed the water he carried. “You found fresh water?”

“I heard it. With the rain and the snow melt, the stream below is roaring. I thought it was the wind at first, but took a chance.” He jerked his chin in the direction. “About a quarter of a mile down, past the line of trees.”

Raisa snatched her canteen and took a long drink. He watched her throat work as she swallowed. His own went dry. “I discovered something else.”

She wiped the back of her hand over her mouth and looked at him in question. “What?”

“Smoke. On the other side of the stream. I can just make out the top of a chimney through the trees.
